The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose.

I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.

She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went.

She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At! the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet.

I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”

(this cracked me up!)

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.

We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!

There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.

Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.

The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.”

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

When you finish reading this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family, they’ll really enjoy it!

REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL.

We make a Living by what we get, We make a Life by what we give.

Companhia Vale do Rio Doce

So today Companhia Vale do Rio Doce tabled its offer to acquire INCO, in an all cash deal that would create one of the three largest diversified mining companies in the world. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, CVRD is a multinational corporation with its operations spanning across 4 continents and 17 countries.

On another note, Brazil IT, an effort by several Brazilian IT services and solutions providers to open up a world of opportunities in your front-yard, is the future of near-shore outsourcing for companies committed to gaining competitiveness by reducing costs, while working with highly qualified IT developers within the same time zone and cultural boundaries. Brazil is one of the world’s largest economies and its growing IT market is currently estimated at over US$10 billion dollars.

House Musiic

I would have to say throughout my highschool years, music was just about the only thing that kept me together. Having been exposed to a wide variety of music through my youth, and the abundance of musical talented which resides within my family its no wonder why music is such an important aspect of who I am. I would say I have a good musical ear.

We are all introduced to music at a very young age, most of us grew up listening to the music our parents played. In fact, I would argue that the musical tastes of our parents heavily influence the type of music one likes and follows.

Classic House means different things to different people. Wikipedia defines house music as ‘uptempo music for dancing and has a comparatively narrow tempo range, generally falling between 118 beats per minute (bpm) and 135 bpm, with 127 bpm being about average since 1996.’

Another one of my favourite genres of electronic music is ‘Trance’. Techno and trance, the two primary dance music genres that developed alongside house music in the mid 1980s and early 1990s respectively, can share this basic beat infrastructure, but usually eschew house’s live-music-influenced feel and black or Latin music influences in favor of more synthetic sound sources and approach.

I like electronic music because it knows no gender or race. It is somewhat timely, and has evolved smoothly.

And its almost complete…

So the kitchen project is nearing completion. Friday the kitchen countertop was delivered, and Saturday the kitchen cupboards were delivered – well kinda. So I opted for an Ikea kitchen…hallarum eucalyptus veneer and glass avskit fronts. I don’t know if you have ever purchased something from Ikea, but part of their value proposition is to pass on the cost savings associated with not having to pre-assembled goods before selling them to the end customer. So I prepared myself for the task..70…that’s right seventy flat boxed packages. I basically assembled my entire kitchen. It took all weekend…but Phil and I persevered and got the majority of it done. We have some assembling/leveling and adding the finishing touches (under cabinet valence and lighting). But as you can see by the below pictures…those tasks are on hold until the attic dry wall is completed.

Espace Bell – The Final Frontier

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations — to boldly go where no one has gone before.”

Espace Bell…what a journey it has been.

In the early days, Bell Distribution was where it was at. Limitless possibilities, highly motivated individuals who worked as a truly unified team to revolutionize the way Bell Canada and Bell Mobility did business. Looking back over the seven years, my company (and I will always consider BDI to be my company even though I am no longer employed by BDI directly) has evolved in ways its initial founders could never have imagined.

In its simplest form, BDI was created to merge the operations of PhoneCentre/TeleBoutique (Traditional Bell Canada Wireline Retail locations) and the independently owned/controlled Bell Mobility retail locations in order to create synergies, operating efficiencies, scalability, economies of scale, and provide a new growth engine for the enterprise.

BDI’s founding members had all the drive, excitement, passion, and economic resources to truly invigorate the way Bell Canada did business. A clear, well thought out mission and vision was key to BDI’s runaway success. BDI was a combination of both old and new; Partnering and Co-Operating were the new defacto standard. As an employee of BDI you fully understood your role; everyone at BDI was responsible for truly managing some facet of the organization. Bottom up management was deemed as the only productive and value creating way. Virtual teams, cross functional teams, and true customer focus. It was about the relentless pursuit of charting uncharted territories. True responsibilities, accountabilities, and rewards were the norm.

Age, Politics, Gender, Race, and Socio-Economic status were irrelevant. It was about who could do the best job; Every single employee truly brought value to the organization. Why do I say this? Because a great deal of effort went into planning the organizational structure and employee hierarchy within BDI. Even BDI’s flagship head office was developed and designed in a way that promoted barrier free, open thinking. An employee’s dream work oasis (at least it was for me).

So what’s my point? I’m hoping with the right people engaged we can reclaim this culture. Re-invigorate. Plan a new future together and boldly go where others dare not. Selfless motivation and the relentless pursuit of excellence is what I believe to be the key to reinvigorating our workforce. Each and every one of us is responsible for instilling motivation and work-life balance so that people can breathe, have fun, and be extremely productive stakeholders.
