I had the wonderful opportunity of attending an offsite event a number of years ago @ Queen’s University. The the was the ‘Olympics’ and the team spirit that unites us all. One of the key messages conveyed during the event was this notion of ‘Servant Leadership’

I only now have begun reading the work, and the concepts introduced to me during that memorable event.

Servant Leadership is about six things:
Be Authentic (Be real, be you)
Be Vulnerable
Be Accepting
Be Present (there’s nothing like the present moment)
Be Useful

I have a nice token of remembrance from that event – its a collage of pictures.

Each team was given a way of being, and we were tasked with creating a piece of art. Each team member was encouraged to participate and add to the creativity. The piece I worked on was titled ‘A Moment in Time’ and I have it proudly displayed above my work desk at home. I look at it almost daily.

Sometimes I look back and think how really attuned I was to being present – in the moment. I think with age it becomes more of a challenge to really live in the moment. I want to return to that place…I want to be real and authentic. I want to make sure that i’m not just being efficient, but rather I want to be truly effective.

I’m only part way through chapter one, but so far its a great read.

‘I am proud – deal with it’ (that’s what I wrote in my final year book). I had guts then. I was true to myself then.

How would I describe myself now – I don’t really know, I’ll have to get back to you when I have some time to meditate and look inward at who it is that I’ve become.
